Convert 3D Object File to STL

Start here when the source is a generic 3D object file and the target is STL for print prep.

Scope

Convert 3D Object File to STL

This page is a print-prep guide for object-to-STL intent, not a claim that every generic 3D file can be converted directly.

Focus points

  • Explains when OBJ-style mesh files can move toward STL
  • Keeps print-readiness checks separate from basic format conversion
  • Points native software files to the right support path

FAQ

Core support questions

Answers to the main follow-up questions.

Is a 3D object file always the same as OBJ? +

Not always. Many people mean an OBJ mesh, but the phrase can also describe a generic model file. Check the extension before choosing an STL path.

Does STL keep materials? +

No. STL is for geometry. Materials, textures, UVs, and animation are not part of the normal STL handoff.

What makes a model ready for STL? +

A printable STL needs clean, closed geometry, sensible scale, and enough thickness for the target printer and material.
